American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)

ACTFL has a number of resources that teachers can use to structure their classrooms and analyze students’ performance in language classes that include but are not limited to proficiency guidelines, Can-do statements, proficiency benchmarks, performance indicators.

Can-do statements, developed as a result of collaboration between National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSL) and ACTFL itself in 2017, guide teachers in structuring their curricula and lessons plans, and help students set learning goals for the language proficiency and provide the reflection of their growth. These statements are organized according to different modes of Communication — Interpretive, Interpersonal, Presentational. Can-do statements show growth in communicative skills across different levels.
